家住辛辛納提市的芭芭拉.漢森女士是一位坐在輪椅上的殘疾人，但在為她專門設(shè)計(jì)的廚房里，她仍然可以得心應(yīng)手地為全家人準(zhǔn)備晚餐。洗菜池和爐灶底下是留空的，方便她的輪椅進(jìn)出，所有的把手都是長(zhǎng)條形的，她可以輕松地開啟。工作臺(tái)的高度也做了調(diào)整。
我曾在1998年10月去過(guò)羅得島設(shè)計(jì)學(xué)院，去參加那一年的美國(guó)全國(guó)藝術(shù)和設(shè)計(jì)院校委員會(huì)的年會(huì)，另外一個(gè)目的就是想去見見哈里森。沒(méi)有想到他在9月22日去世了。后來(lái)，我在美國(guó)國(guó)家設(shè)計(jì)博物館的庫(kù)帕－修維特畫廊（the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum ），看到了那個(gè)“全廚房”，那是在10月末了。在展覽的留言本上，許許多多的觀眾寫下了對(duì)這位“全設(shè)計(jì)”開創(chuàng)者的哀悼和懷念。
有關(guān)“全設(shè)計(jì)”的國(guó)家標(biāo)準(zhǔn)現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)比較普遍了。英語(yǔ)中，國(guó)家標(biāo)準(zhǔn)叫做“national legislation”，是由各個(gè)國(guó)家、地區(qū)提出、并通過(guò)立法形成的設(shè)計(jì)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)規(guī)范，這些法規(guī)主要是為了保護(hù)殘疾人士的公平權(quán)益而形成的。下面這四個(gè)國(guó)家法規(guī)是目前比較完善的全設(shè)計(jì)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)：
澳大利亞殘疾人士反歧視法（Australian Disability Discrimination Act 1992 ）
加拿大的安大略殘疾人士法（Canadian Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act of 2005 ）；
美國(guó)殘疾人士法（United States Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 ，其中，Section 508 Amendment 是1973年版本的殘疾人法的修正案the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 ）
英國(guó)殘疾人反歧視法（United Kingdom Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and 2005 ）。
